Women with Disabilities Champion Food Security at 2026 International Women's Day Celebration in Calabar

Calabar, Nigeria – March 12, 2026

Hakara Carewell Initiative (HCI) and Initiative for the Upliftment of Disabled Persons (IFUDIP) with and supported by the French Embassy Fund for Civil Society Organizations (FEF-OSC), will commemorate the 2026 International Women's Day (IWD) with a special celebration highlighting the achievements of women with disabilities participating in the SHE-FARMS Project.

The event, themed "Give To Gain," will take place at 84 Mayne Avenue, Calabar, bringing together beneficiaries, community leaders, development partners, media organizations, and stakeholders to spotlight the role of women with disabilities in advancing food security through agriculture.

The SHE-FARMS Project — Strengthening Her Enterprise: Farming and Resilience for Market Sustainability — supports women with disabilities by providing agricultural training, farm inputs, and financial literacy through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA). The initiative has empowered beneficiaries to build sustainable livelihoods while contributing to local food production.

The celebration featured a keynote address by Pastor Beulah Effiong and key mile-one achievement of SHE-FARM project by Dominion Bassey, the unveiling of the SHE-FARMS theme song by artist Asari Duke, presentation of a draft policy document promoting the economic inclusion of women with disabilities by Bar. Uduak, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with market off-takers to strengthen agricultural value chains and sustainability of SHE-FARM market sustainability.

The event also featured beneficiary testimonials, cultural performances, music presentations, and a comedy performance, reflecting the creative spirit of the ART X Impact campaign supported by the French Embassy.

The celebration aims to amplify the voices and achievements of women with disabilities while encouraging inclusive development and community support.

"This event is not only a celebration of International Women's Day but also a platform to recognize the resilience, innovation, and leadership of women with disabilities who are transforming agriculture and strengthening food security in their communities," the organizers stated.

The Event featured the presentation of a Special Recognition Award for Pillars of Support to Women Living with Disabilities, honoring individuals who have championed inclusion and empowerment.

Through initiatives like SHE-FARMS, Hakara Care-Well Initiative and its partners continue to demonstrate that when women with disabilities are empowered, communities grow stronger and more inclusive.
